64 bit OS

Hey all, I was wondering, since I'll probably build a new computer over the summer, is a 64 bit OS recommended?

I was thinking about it because with a 64-bit I can put 8 gigs of RAM in, and if I did that, I probably wouldn't have to upgrade in a long time (regarding RAM anyway).

But what are the pros and cons to using one?

What i have read in this forum some 64bit OS are really good for example the Vista one seems to be well like but the XP 64bit seems to have problems with Applications some are not supported you should be sweet with 7 Gigs of ram for a while depending what you use it for
 
I'd use it for everything.

but yeah, hopefully with lots of RAM and good components I wont have to upgrade for a while.
