64 Bit Overview

I've heard a lot about 64 bit processing being the future and that everything currently is 32 bit. But what exactly is this? I'm not looking for a ton of information but just an overview. What do you need for 64 bit computing? Is it all in the processor and assuming it is, what processors currently support it? I know AMD 64 does but what else? I'm currently using an Intel Core 2 Duo. Also, how will this work with Vista?

As far as the CPU goes, you will just need to find one that supports it. Other than other hardwares, you will have to look into the softwares that you will be using. Some of them are 64-bit, some of them are not; some have both versions, some don't. So it's not just all the hardwares that you need to worry about. Vista has a 64-bit edition also, so similarly like XP 64, you will need 64-bit hardware and software compatability. The best thing to do in these cases would be to totally build a new system from the ground up, if you are planning on using 64-bits over 32.
