64-bit technology

Hello everyone,

I hope my question wasn't posted before.I looked around though, and didn't find it.

So, i would like to know the following:

I have Windows XP OS (32-bit) installed on one hard drive. What would happen if I would buy another HD and installed Vista 64-bit on the new HD?Would there be any technical problems? My CPU and Motherboard both support 64-bit.
Would I have to change the setting in BIOS everytime from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice versa (depending on which OS would I start)?

Thank you and best regards,

klemen

If you did that, then when you boot up the computer it will ask you what OS you want to boot from. You dont have to change any settings in the BIOS and whatnot.

Im not sure if you're aware, but you can create a separate partition on your hard drive and install another OS on that.

if you still wanted to get a 2nd hard drive, i'd suggest splitting your current hard drive into 2 equal size partitions, and installing each o/s on a seperate partition, and then using the second hard drive as storage.

i'm ocd about having seperate hd's for storage and o/s and programs.

Thank you for your help.

I am aware about creating more partitions on the same hard drive, but i wouldn' t like to format the current hard drive - don't want to reinstall every program, at least not at this point. This wil be my last option, if everythig else fails.
I currently have one large (where windos xp are installed) and one very small partition (10 GB). I think 10 GB isn't enough for installing Vista. Doing this would be pointless.

But i agree it would be safer to instal both OS's on the same hard drive.

Would it be OK if I copied the partition (where Windows XP are) to the new hard drive (using Norton ghost or something) and than install Vista on another partition on the same hard drive?

Thank you again, best regards

You can use a program like Partition Magic to create partitions without formatting the hard drive, and you dont lose any data.

As for imaging, im not sure since the drive would have a different size, so I dont think it would work.
