64 or 32 bit vista?

So, building a new rig in the near future, and obviously I need to pick an OS. I could go with a copy of XP pro, but I really want to take advantage of direct x 10 so it looks like I'm going to get a copy of vista. The mobo I'm going with is an eVGA 680i sli that supports 8 gigs of ddr 1200 in 64 bit mode. Obviously I'm not going to get that much ram or at that speed right away but for upgrading purposes it's sure is nice to know that is supported. My question is that if I go with a 64 bit vista, will I run into compatability issues? In other words will only 64 bit programs run? If that is the case maybe I will just stick with a 32 bit vista. Is there a huge difference in performance between 32bit and 64 bit anyway? I know that I asked a few questions in this post, but could someone help me out here? Thanks!
 
There isn't a big difference unless you needs vast amounts of RAM. There are also a lot of compatiabilty issues with 64-Bit because new drivers are needed.

So you think I would be fine with just a 32 bit vista? The purpose of this rig will be mostly HD entertainment and HD gaming in direct x 10. I'm going to start out with 2 gigs of 800 mhz ram, but knowing I could uprgade to 8 gigs of 1200 mhz ram in 64 bit...I don't know, makes me really want to go 64.
 
I've ran Vista's 32 and 64 bit versions and I havent had any incompatibility issues with the 64 bit version that I havent had with the 32 bit version.


btw, where abouts in NH do you live?

32bit Programs that are run on a 64bit OS, usually get run in a "virtual environment" and are installed to "Program Files (x86)". The only program i can't get to run is Halo which is a shame, but im pretty sure its just me because others have said they can run it fine. And im pretty sure thats vista in general as opposed to the fact im using 64bit.
 
there is not a large improvement form 32 to 64 bit os. Not as many programs were made to run 64 bit so they will still function like a 32 bit install... it is also hard to find 64 bit drivers, like for link sys items... if you are an average user that likes everything to work without hassle.. don't, but if you are an avid person who doesn't mind a challenge and will actually notice the small improvement go for it. I would just get better specs to make up for it...

Right now theres no big advantage to using 64-Bit processors and OS's, but not too far into the future the 32-Bit Vista version will start to become obsolete and the 64-Bit will become the norm, especially once we start needing more then 4GB of RAM.
 
I bought the 32 bit version of vista but that is only because I have a 32 bit processor when I build my new computer by the end of this year or early next year I will be going with the 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate.

I would go with 64 bit if your processor is 64 bit cause by the end of this year or sooner software is going to be going 64 bit.
