Hi all,

buying a new computer. always been an intel fan. thinking of a 64 bit machine this time, and an AMD chip.

Need some advice on whether 64bit is mature enough at the moment, and if there have been people with compatability issues with 64bit Windows?

ive believed in getting the latest technology if buying a new computer... but not sure on the 64bit thing...

Is it actually a performance benefit? i have not used one thoroughly as yet so dont know what the 64bit experience is like

any advice or experiences are greately appreciated :)

Thanks
AK

64bit's not really caught on. There are some compatabilty issues with 64 bit windows. Really, you should look into duel core if you want to stay on top rather than worry about 64 bit. But of course, there's nothing wrong with Athlon 64's :)

Yeah, but remember 64 bit CPUs will work fine in a 32 bit environment. You can, of course, use an Athlon 64 bit with the regular version of XP (or any other OS), without any problems.

i would save money on the cpu, stick to 32 and bet like and sli pair of 7800's opf something
ill love you forver then

If you buy a dual core it will have 64bit capability. There is no performance gain from 64bit at all. Before all the AMD fanboys have a conniption, the performance difference on a P4(32bit) vs an Athlon 64 is due to design differences not register sizes.

thanks

thanks for the comments...

i didn't realise you could run normal 32bit Windows on a 64bit hardware architecture...

you obviously wouldnt get the 64bit performance...?

It will be as if you're using a 32-bit processor. Not that there are any performance benefits with using 64 bit with current, 32-bit, applications anyway.
