hello everyone,

my question in in regards to Vista 64 bit operating system. I am currently in the process of picking out a new computer and wanted to know if i should go with the 64bit over the 32 bit? i currently use a lot of programs for things such as light programming, sound design, and home automation and i am not sure if these programs even support a 64 bit system.

My business partner tends to think that i will have nothing but problems finding program versions (the ones i use) that support Vista 64 bit operation. He has told me he has had problems himself and most only support 32 bit systems. Even up till a couple weeks ago Rane Serato only supported a Vista 32 bit system.

so let me break down my questions so none are missed...

1) do i need Vista 64 bit?

2) is there any major operating benefits over Vista 32 bit?

3) i was thinking about doing the vista with an XP downgrade...should i?

4) i plan to have this computer for many years...will going with 32 bit outdate the computer faster? Will i be limiting myself from anything to come?

5) the usage for the computer is personal, small business, entertainment...will 32 bit be too slow for this?

now i know its cheaper and most likely better to build my own but i will be going with an HP for various personal reasons. I am looking at the following set up...

HP d5100t series

Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q9400 (2.66GHz)
3GB DDR2-800MHz dual channel SDRAM (2x1024,2x512)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9500GS, DVI-I, VGA, HDMI
500GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, 1394, audio, video (for TV Tuner)
ATSC-NTSC TV tuner with PVR, FM tuner, remote
(Integrated 7.1 channel sound w/ front audio ports)
Microsoft(R) Office Small Business Edition 2007

6) is there anything you see on this build that might limit me or hurt me in anyway?

I appreciate all the help in advance.

Thanks!

Joe

64-bit operating systems help fully utilize your hardware so you can have the smoothest computing experience possible. I'd go with 64-bit! :)

1. Its better then XP 64 bit more program support.
2. Can use more then 4GBs of RAM + I see a 2-3 FPS increase in games.
3. Your call...I have both discs
4. 64 bit is going to become more popular now with Dual Cores and Quad Cores so yes 32 bit wont be around forever.
5. Build the PC your wallet begs you
6. are you a gamer? 4850 Radeon or 4870 Radeon

no i am not a gamer. i do use a good amount of lighting and audio design programs that can require a bit of power behind them. I think my largest concern is the programs being able to run on Vista 64 bit at this point.
