6600gt or 6800 something?

i currently have a 6600le, and its nice, but my friend has a 6600gt (on a nearly identical system) and he can run oblivion a whole lot better than i can. im thinking of either getting a 6600gt, or one of the 6800s, but i need advice because ive heard that the gt is infact better than some of the lower 6800s. anyone have any advice, or know which 6800s the gt overlaps?

im probably looking at the $150ish range too
 
Or better yet eVGA 7600GT. I assume you need a PCI-E card rather than an AGP card?

The 6600GT tends to give similar performance to a 6800XT or LE.

thanks a lot for the input guys. im leaning mostly towards the 6800gs, so i would like to ask you guys a few questions.

first, and the stupidest, on the side of the card opposite from where it connects to the pci express slot, is that small little connection thing. is that for anything? sli maybe?

second, it requires an available 6 pin PCI-E power connector, which im assuming is the standard power connecter that i have on my current LE? (see picture)


it says it requires a 350 watt power supply and this is mine: Alienware® 460 Watt Max Power Supply , so im assuming that should be alright

my last concern is the length of the card. im assuming it wont be an issue since i have an alienware (tremendous case) and i measured that theres like 10-11 inches from the back of the case to where the card would be coliding with the hard drive slots. anyone have this card that can comment? (check the pic as well to see the available space.

Your choice, but the 7600GT performs better at a lower price.

Not sure which connection you mean (i'm assuming it's not the power connector circled). Perhaps you could clarify?

No, but the card should come with a molex-PCI-E adapter anyway

There's more to a PSU than wattage, but yes, you should be fine.

It's roughly comparable to ATI's X1600XT, so between the 6600GT & 6800GS in nVidia terms. The price is good, but it won't give the performance of the 7600GT, or even the 6800GS.
 
ok, thanks again for all the info. im looking at the 7600gt you recommended, and now im probably thinking that. i have a VID adapter lying around, and it comes with 2, so thats no problem, and it looks like i dont even have to deal with the power issue involved in the 6800. (though i will possibly have the connector currently plugged into my LE just lying around..looks like the 7600gt just plugs right onto the board and nothing else)

Use the search feature, there have been about a half dozen posts comparing the 76GT with the 68GS already, which include links to performance reviews comparing the two card. The 76GT is invariably shown to be markedly superior.

ah youre right, my mistake. somebody sent that to me last night at like 2 am and i wasnt paying much attention XD
 
thanks again for the input and the info guys. i'll be ordering the 7600gt, hopefully tonight. so last questions:

ive swapped out and replaced pci cards all the time, but never pci express. anytthing i should know specifically that would be different? o.o

also, my 6600le connects to my psu, but this 7600gt does not. i can just leave thet connector hanging around right?

lastly, i already have the latest nvidia drivers installed, so just turning the comp off, swapping the cards, and turning it back on should be fine, right? theyre definately compatible with this card.
