6950 flashing

I'm wondering is it safe to flash 6950 to 6970? I'vs seen others YouTube do it successfully just wondering it is that easy and safe? Another question I got it when you are on ATIflash and click save what does that do? Does it save the bios in both bios? And is really that easy to recovery just a flick of a switch

i think it is safer to try to unlock the extra cores then overclock the gpu so you know you aren't going too fast and overheating. But not all 6950's can do this and if this is a newer card i think it is extramely rare, i think only the original cards that were reference models could do it.

If you have a card with a bios switch and the bios flash doesnt work you can flip it back to the backup bios and flash it back. If your card doesnt have the switch, flash at your own risk.

Got 3 questions.

Flashing and Unlocking the same?
Yeah, im buying a sapphire 6950, with many reviews sayings its got dual bios switch, so if the computer doesn't boot, i can just easily flip the switch and its back to normal?
So theres no risk in flashing/unlocking if you got dual bios switch?

Yes and No. Flashing is the process. You are talking about flashing the 6970 BIOS on your 6950. He is talking about unlocking the extra shaders on your 6950 BIOS. This will leave all of the rest of the settings the same as they should be.

Yes. If I remember right one BIOS is locked completely. So before flashing make sure that you have it to the unlocked position.

There is some. Flashing the 6970 BIOS will run different voltages and timings on the 6950 memory. Over time it is possible that you might have trouble with the card not working properly. It is not all that likely but I would rather not risk it if it were my card.

Flashing the 6950 BIOS with the unlocked shaders is safer because it uses the same voltages and timings that come stock with the 6950 rather than the one that is on the 6970. There can still be problems but they are less frequent.

If you do want to flash the card use a BIOS that is from your original card but with the shaders unlocked. IMHO, that will give you the best chance of not having it damaged.

Here is a BIOS that has the shaders unlocked
