I have this e machine with a celeron(don't know how fast), 512mb ram and 8mb of that dedicated to video. Very old, slow machine. It has xp on it now. My question isn't is it a good idea, but can windows 7. Be put on it at all? I'm sure its over 1ghz which is the min, but the ram is under and there is virtually no video. So will 7 install if I put in a 128mb vid card?(Min as well).

Even if you can get Windows 7 installed, I'd check the model of your computer and see if there are available drivers that will fully be compatible with the hardware in the computer. Any particular reason why you want to upgrade to Windows 7? :P

If it does install I guarantee that you will put XP back in.
I have installed 7 on a comp with better specs than yours and went back to XP.

I have installed 7 on worse specs than yours and kept it for a while. I only went back to XP because of driver problems and because the HD was uber slow on the system. Check out my results here.

The computer isn't for me. They asked me to put 7 on it and offered to pay. I was asking if it was possible to save some time and maybe convince them a fresh xp install would be better

Yes, it will work. The actual speed of the processor will decide how useable it will be. Also you WILL be using the 7 basic theme.

Yep, also 7 has a comparatively small display driver database, as M$ decided it would only include drivers in 7 for GPUs that supported Aero. Just thought I'd letcha know :)
