70 degrees stock

hey everyone, i'll get straight to the point?

well basically i my Pentium 4 2.4Ghz runs at low 70's (Celsius) on stock clocks when under load... i know it is fairly high, so i was just wondering if there was anything i could do (free) other than putting new thermal paste on that i have lying around.

and while i'm here i might aswell ask.
What is the highest Temps you have ever got on your cpu?

cheers and thanks in advance!

That is quite high,But some Pentium 4s run hot anyways.

Clean up all the dust you can with compressed air. Clean up the all the fans intakes/outtake vents ,remove the cpu cooler and clean it. Then apply some fresh thermal compound to it and see if that lowers the temp.

Whats the Ventilation like in your system?

I know you said free,But it could be time for an aftermarket cooler :)

I will make sure i do what you have listed, any tips on what i can clean the heatsink with?
And where would i be able to find compressed air? (i live in Australia)

No point in me buying an aftermarket cooler because i just purchased the parts for my new build yesterday! :)

and i only have one intake fan for the system... so nothing special at all lol.

thanks for your input.

May i ask what your highest temps have been?

You will want to get something like ArctiClean Thermal Compound Cleaner, which come in 60ml bottles,Should be able to pick this stuff up easy.

Its around £3.50,So not expensive at all,and it lasts ages you can use it over and over again in your future build.

So you have an Intake fan on the front of your system?...no exhaust fan? on the back?

My highest temps ive seen were around 61c,But you cant realy compare temps from a P4 to a Quad core.

My borther had this problem with his pentium 4. the stock heatsink didn't have all the pushpins in, even though it looked like it did. your best bet is to reseat the heatsink and make sure that the pins are all in. eg, if you pull on the heatsink once it's clipped on none of the corners should pop up at all

oh sweet thanks for that bit of advice (the both of you)

I will reseat the heatsink once i build my new computer. The last time i took of the heatsink i wrecked my mobo because the cpu had been like glued to the heatsink or something... and it sorta got a little ripped out woops lol...
and one more thing, would that problem i just mentioned be from dodgey thermal paste or from high temps?

thanks again
