Hey, after looking at parts for the last three months, Im finally about to buy my computer. I need help figuring out a build. It will be used for gaming, and I want to be able to play almost any game out atleast on decent settings. The budget is around $600-$750 for everything except tower and psu (just bought 650 watt power supply), monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers. Basically I need everything inside the tower. Thanks in advance!

What brand is the 650W power supply you just bought? Also, how many amps are on the 12V rails?

not sure, because it is going to be a birthday gift, and i havent seen it, but Im sure it was a good once because my friend that got it for me knows tons about computers (he works for geek squad). I know about $100 on sale from newegg about 3 weeks ago.

if you want to be able to play all games go for a Core 2 Duo system, these may be a choice:

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211064
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144414
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049
TOTAL : aprox. $640

Thats what im getting!!!!

Or if you want to go extreme you can wait for your budget and get this RAM and this GPU instead, for $210 more.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211066
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150195
TOTAL: aprox. $850 (inlcuding above mobo, cpu...)

somehow i knew the memory wasn't the best choice, (right) :D
thanks anyways, im getting other than A-data, so is OCZ a good brand??

In the past, OCZ has had problems with Intels. If I were to choose the most compatible ram, I would chose Corsair.

Not saying that your friend is not smart, but being part of the geek squad doesn't make him smart. If, however, the PSU was $100 on sale, it is most likely a good one.

Yeah, i've looked for corsair, but i cant find any 800 MHz PC6400 but one that is 1.9v, what would happen if i put 1.9v ram into a mobo that supports only 1.8v????

btw, coming back to *apatel9*, just change that mem, make sure is not A-data, as people mentioned, is not a very good brand...

thanks for all your help, already but now i have to change my budge. Sorry about that, but i have some extra money comming in and i think that i can spend 800 or so dollars now. What changes would i make, assuming that i want to oc my ram/processor/gpu.

Is it even possible to get the following:
Raptor HD
X1950XTX (or something really nice which will last years)
Cooling product (not sure what)

If you have $800 to spend, this maybe be it... (note - mobo and cpu are the same - the raptor is going to be hard to get if you want the X1950XTX, you might have to stay with the Caviar HDD, or else spend more than $1000)

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012 (same)
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 (same)
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145566
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144414 (same)
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102067

TOTAL: aprox $745 (with the extra $55 you might want to wait till you find a cheaper more convenient Raptor...)

Okay so here is what I have in mind, get the build ramodkk posted, add a raptor when i have money and make that harddrive for all my downloads (movies, music and such) and make my raptor for games/processes. Initially get one gig of DDR800 ram, and when I get more money buy another gig.
Questions I have: is the x1950xtx the best non dx10 vid card I can get? Can i oc it? Is there a better high end card for around the money?
Also, can that mother board handle OCing? and what is the really good ram for ocing?

Yes the mobo is good for overclocking.

My roommate has a raptor and I actually see faster load times than him with my old AMD 64 3200 system. He has Opty 165 OC'd = X2 4600 basically.

Ram would be the better upgrade (getting 2 gigs sooner).

The card he recommended is the X1950XT 256MB not the X1950XTX 512MB Card. So no it's not the best non DX10 card you can get.

Good ram for overclocking is usually DDR800 and a brand with 4-4-4-12 timings. It really depends on the ram. Some 667 ram OC's pretty good. That really is a little luck and a lot of research. I have Gskill ram and it OC's like a champ. Omega has patriot and his does too.

what is the best non dx10 card out right now, how much does it cost, and is it worth getting. Is the g80 worth getting considering the R600 (I believe thats going to be its main competition) is going to be out sometime in feb? If I was building a computer sometime this month and beginning of January what advice an all of you guys give me?
