hi I am needing help. gateway sold me a computer that now I find needs a special expensive type memory to upgrade. I am wanting to add more memory to my computer to speed it up. it is a gateway made 2001. it is a 700C CTO if that means anything. I have checked gateway and they want $100 per stick for 128 MB each and I must add two. they are Rambus 800 MHz .. my computer is a pentium 4 with 1.8 GB.

I want to find this memory on some of the website I see advertising memory, but from what I understand this memory is very special and not just the ordinary rambus? Can anyone tell me where to find this. gate way gives the part number for 128 MB as mfr part # 5000646 and for the 256 MB as 5000647...I thought the manufactur was Kingston...but I am not sure

can someone guide me. Local computer stores just keep trying to sell me a new computer...but I am not ready to invest in a whole new system just yet.

Gateway should just be using ordinary Samsung 800MHz RDRAM. You shouldn't need any special RAM (other than it being RAMBUS). Unfortunately RDRAM is not cheap, it's not a real good deal from gateway but it's not completely terrible.
