7200 rpm vs 5400 in laptops

exactly how much faster are 7200 rpm hard drives over 5400? if speed is proportional to the rpm, 7200 is only 33% faster.

for laptops it seems like a bad deal because 7200 rpm drives are louder, bigger and heavier, use more power and heat up more, and don't provide as much disk space for the price. which would you recommend?

Most people don't use a 5400RPM drive for speed...it uses less power thus your battery lives longer.

Also there is a very noticeable difference in speed between 7200RPM and 5400RPM.

Personally id shell out the cash and get a 30-60GB SSD drive depending on what you do. They are fast + energy efficient and they wont screw up if your on the move due to no moving parts.
