721MB video onto 700MB CD?

Does anyone know if there's a way that I can fit a 721MB video file onto a 700MB CD? I wonder if there's a way that I can compress the .avi file so that it remains in a playable form. I don't want to have to compress the file using winrar; I would like the file to be in playable format when it's on the CD. I'd be willing to sacrifice some of the video quality if need be.

1. If its a data cd you can usually do it if yer careful (not cheap media + not burning fast)
2. If its a Mode2/2352 (VCD) file the burn it in the appropriate mode and you'll be fine

Yes but I've heard that you can damage the burner if you overburn!?!?
Thats why ya burn slowly :P

In addition

Many "new" drives boast their capability to overburn. Yes, as Praetor said, you should still burn slow as to avoid any possible damage. By overburning, you are bypassing the "legal" limits of the media you are burning on. You are also stressing the hardware (burner). This is why many manufacturers do not condone such use and warn that it may result in permanent damage. However, as has been mentioned, it is definitely possible.

The CD I'm using is a basic 700MB/80 minute CD and the file I want to burn is a 721MB .avi file.

I tried to create a VCD using Nero. Nero took about an hour to encode the disc and when I came back too look at the progress there was a window informing me that there was too much data to fit on the disc.

I wonder what the problem could be?

i believe nero encodes the .avi file into an .mpeg file (when you choose the "burn as VCD" option) which is actually BIGGER than the original .avi

hehe...i waited for 3hrs for my .avi to encode to SVCD when a message popped up and said

Too much data? I think 710 mb is about the overburning limit for a data CD
Its approaching 736MB (well thats my record anyways)

You gotta

I trust u didnt use Neroto encode..

Yes I did use Nero to encode. Why? Is that bad?
Nero is horrible :P Like i mean if you're one of the lucky people to get it to work perfectly than congrats but something like TMPGEnc (which has a free version) is faster, provides more options and significantly more quality.

So how does it work? When you encode using TMPGEnc does it create another file of approximately the same size as the .avi file? And then you run the new file through Nero?

Fire up TMPGEnc, a wizard will greet you. Use the wizard. If you make a SVCD output file then burn SVCD, if you make VCD then burn VCD. If you make DVD then author then burn IFO/VOB

:)

I personally love Nero's converting results, however, after using many others I have found WINAVI is a really good one. Correct me if I am wrong, but DIVX has the highest compression ration (smaller file results). Only downfall is that DIVX will not play on a standalone DVD player.

Xvid usually scores slightly higher than DivX.

Some standlones can but the list is short.

Well I have to use a 700MB CD because it's for a friend of mine who bought the CDs.

I've just tried to burn another .avi file onto CD, as a VCD and it wont fit onto the damn CD! Again it took over an hour to encode and then tells me that there isn't enough room on the CD. I've checked and the CD is definately blank. What could be the problem?

I'm running Nero 5.5 (Fully updated) and when I drag the file onto Nero, it way overshoots the coloured bar at the bottom of the window and implies that the file is in excess of 850MB in size!
