7800 underclocking?

So I found coolbits and was tinkering with it some. I never tried to overclock, I have no desire too. However, I would like to make my computer run cooler if I can safely. I messed around with things and I THINK I got the GPU down to 350 core and 850 mem, but it's kinda hard to tell on the desktop and with that simple regedit... Either way, the only difference I noticed while doing that is a 1*C drop from 46 to 45...and it was probably still cooling off from playing COD2.

So, anyone else try this? Keep in mind I'm quite picky about this stuff and really don't want to underclock if there's any way to damage the GPU!
 
Well, I don't think that underclocking is going to damage anything, but maybe in the long term it might... Like, say if the GPU got used to running at a lower speed than it should, and when you tried to put it back to its original setting, the video card runs hotter than it should, or struggles to run at that speed. Again, I'm not sure whether that's true or not, but hey, I'm not an expert...
 
Hmm... Good point. I doubt I will try this seeing as it doesn't make too much of a difference, but I thought it was worth a shot.

How much is the temperature of your graphics card affecting your system temperature?
 
Why not just get a extension heatsink fan for the card? The time it takes you to underclock it all god, you could just spend 20$ and have a nice cooler for the card.
 
Underclocking won't damage the card, but do your really need to? Those temps are fine, a GPU can get much hotter than a CPU without damage. Sure underclocking may cause the card to run a bit cooler, but the card was designed to run safely at the normal speed. If you think that the card temp is causing a hotter system temp, i'd probably add some more case fans, but it doesn't seem necessary.
