One thing is the fx will allow full 16x crossfire where the x board has one 16x and one 8x pci-express slot.

What your looking for with the onboard video to help your video card is the GX series. Not the FX. The GX boards all have on board video which then works with your dedicated video card for more performance. Called hybrid-crossfire. The downside of the GX is that crossfire runs in 16x/8x instead of the 16x/16x with the FX. But Both will do crossfire.

Hi all
I´m looking at the AM3 boards.
I searched a bit but could´nt find the answer. 790X or 790FX .
These are the boards I´m looking at.

1, The 790X

2, The 790FX

As you can see , there´s a bit of a price difference.

I´m more curious as to know if one or the other has on-board graphics to assist my ati card.

Gigabyte hasnt released a AM3 790GX board yet.

The Difference between a 790X and FX is the X is 8X-8X and the FX is 16X-16X in crossfire.

If your running a 4670 Hybrid Crossfire will not work, well it will but only the power saving mode. Hybrid crossfire is really only for the 2400 and 3400 series card.

I´m not looking to crossfire.
I´m more interested in the hybrid crossfire mentioned by Seth.

@ StrangleHold I noticed your running a 720 on a AM2+ , I thought they were only AM3 platform processors. That was the main reason I was looking at those boards, should I just get a descent AM2+ ?

you can run an am3 chip in am2+ board but you cant run am2 chip in am3 board :D

Like zer0 said, AM3 processors will run on AM2+ boards, well most of them. But AM2/+ processors will not fit a AM3 board.

What it is, AM3 are DDR3 memory boards, but the AM2/+ processors do not have a DDR3 memory controller.

But AM3 processors have a DDR2/3 memory controller and will run on both.

A AM2/+ wont fit a AM3 board anyway. AM3 boards sockets only have 938 pin holes.

As far as getting a AM3 board, it all depends if you want to spend the little bit extra on a AM3 board and DDR3 memory.

Ok

Turns out that Hybrid crossfire is only for the 2400 and 3400 cards, and will only bring these up to the equivalent of a 9500gt.

Does any one know if the Hybrid discrete mode will work with the 4670 ?
as this would do me . The 4670 does ok for gaming , but it would be nice if it almost went to standby, and switched to on board graphics for non gaming times.

Should I just look at an AM2+ ?
Is the only advantage going to a AM3 the DDR3 ?
