I'm building a new PC for my friend and would like to know which card would be better the 8800 it's a newer card, but it has less memory; the 7950 has more memory, but it's a on older card. I'm open to suggestions in the same price range :)

the 8800gts will yield the best performance and is dx10 compatible..

Go with this or wait for ATI's new cards, they are supposed to be better.

The 8800GTS is better.

I dont know why everyone compares the older 7 series to it. The 8800GTS and GTX are better then any single car currently offered by ATI or nVidia (except the 7950GX2, since its two cards in one pretty much).

Yeah the 8800 is DEFINITELY better. I would get the 8800 over the 7950 anyday if price is taken out of the equation.
