8 Core Chip

"8 cores of 1.2ghz equal 9.6ghz" ??. Isn't that like saying the x2 3800+ runs at 4ghz (2ghz percore added together), which I thought was wrong?

It is wrong, Sun should know better than to claim that, although it does make a nice marketing tool! Even so, 8 cores, 4 threads per core, 32 total threads would make for huge server performance. The only thing bigger would be the price tag!

From what I've heard, dual cores will do about 1.4-1.8 increase in performance.. not really sure how it maps out after two cores. And yes, it is a marketing scheme, and jo-schmo will think "OMGZ!!! 8 Cores?!?!?!? 9.6 GHz!!" and will get it, thinking this thing will able to drive his car.

AFAIK, the benefits tend to diminish as more cores are added. Naturally, you can get better performance out of multiprocessor configurations as well.

9.6 GHz?! Holy crap. Of course, it won't actually run that fast, but impressive none the less.. although, that's what the Xbox 360 currently runs, 3 3.2 GHz Cores. Pretty old, but still.
no, it will still run at 1.2ghz, except when the info gets there it will get processed immediately because it will never slow down, theres always a processor available.
if they could get that to 2ghz it'd be worth it for a workstation.:o
yea the xbox 360 has 3x 3.2ghz cores... i believe ps3 will be 7x 3.2ghz cores wont it? i mean... its going to be a cell processor with 7 units... or something like that... but its going to be twice as fast like 2 teraflops instead of 1 like the xbox 360

no, the jo-schmo would be like "wth is a core? and what's ghz?!

lol, just thought i'd point that out;)

I don't see how the PS3 can sell.. they won't make a profit.. 7 processors? They estimated it takes over $900 to make one PS3.. even if they sell it for 450, they're losing a 50% profit.. this is rediculous!

ya but they make all the money on teh games and accesories.. microsoft loses liek 150 on every CORE xbox 360 and liek 230 on every premium.. or atleast thats what engadget says...

The PS3 will have ONE processor and ONE core - but it will have 7 SPE's. The SPE's handle floating point performance, and things of that nature. It's great for pure computational power, but doesn't do a whole lot for gaming performance: or so I've been told.
