Are you running your 8 series card on XP or Vista?

I was just wondering how many of you are running 8 series cards on XP, if any. Is there any reason to run 8 series on XP, or is that just dumb and a waste of money? I'm running 2 XFX 7900 GTX's on XP. Is there any reason to move to 8 series on XP?

I dont see a reason to move to XP. The clear advantage is the RAM trap, if your a gamer and want 4gbs of RAM then get a 64bit Vista.
Plus Vista uses DX10

The 8 series (depending on the model), are great performers in DX9 games as well. So yes, there is a reason to run them on XP as well.

I'm not moving to XP, I already have it, and was wondering if I needed/should get Vista if I wanted to move to 8 series.

Better performers than 2 7900GTXs though? Or is it not worth the upgrade if I were staying DX9

DX10 vs DX9 isnt really a big deal to be honest. I misunderstood your situation. Stick with the dual setup that you have now, itll be fine for a while now. Are you having problems with video performance?

Not really at all. Obviously with Crysis, but thats par for the course. I was just wondering, because I see in everyones sigs that they have 8 series cards, and I was just wondering if they were running vista or xp with those. Then I also had the other couple of questions that I've been asking. Thank you for the info though. Theres nothing wrong with learning:)

I am not sure. What I do know is replacing your dual 7900GTX setup right now is impractical. Stick with it, Im sure it performs fine.

I'm running my 512MB 8800GTS on vista, I don't see the point in upgrading to a DX10 card when you just want to run XP, its a waste of money.

Thats what I thought. I just didn't know if they had any performance in DX9 over 7 series cards, or if they were pretty equal except for the DX10 capabilities

I would imagine that they would have abit of an edge over 7 series cards in DX9 but you get them primarily for the DX10 technology, it would be a total waste to use them in XP I think.

Would you say that 8 series performs better in DX10 than 7 series in DX9? Or pretty equivalent because of the added stuff 8 series has to do in DX10

Its really hard to say, DX10 and DX9 are very different, a lot more processing power is needed for DX10 to bring you the extra eye candy, so its really hard to tell.

DX10 adds a number of particle, water, and smoke effects, as well as slightly nicer shadows. It is not worth the money to move up if all you're looking for is eye candy.

Assuming you have the hardware to run Vista right, however, running a DX10 game, using Vista and DX10, but turning off all of the enhancements (essentially making the game run DX9 graphics in a DX10 environment) WILL yield slightly better framerates. Not enough to make it worthwhile, but a little. This is the result of performance optimizations present in Vista.

Right now I'm thinking about upgrading to 64-bit Vista and getting another 2GB of memory. But something like that would probably be a couple hundred bucks by the time everything is said and done, and the performance improvements won't warrant that kind of a cash outlay. But it would look a little prettier.
