80 Cores.

I know there was a thread on this before but I can't find it so I'll try to repost what I put in it.

It's not a CPU, it's 80 'simple' floating point cores. The full thing is some 100 million transisitors (a core 2 is 270-280 someodd million). It's purely a test platform for many cores, and developing power management and data transfer techniques for them.
 
I could list tons of things that could take advantage of 80 cores.

Nowadays, we think of cores MORE along the lines of having 2 cores or 4 cores - and that for a lot of stuff we are only using one core at a time...essentially categories. Core 1 is doing "A" category, core 2 is doing "B" category (or task). They very well might be doing them at the same time, but each is doing a DIFFERENT thing.

What happens when have an architecture where all 80 (or 10 or 20, etc) cores are working completely together as 1 core so to speak? Like one giant supercomputer. Tasks that take maybe 5 hours now could be done in minutes.

That's how 80 cores could be very relevant.
 
Wouldn't something like this be utilized for company servers first? I'm sure they didn't have this in mind for individuals at home because just think of the size of the chip. The chip would be a board itself.

Maybe the new servers coming out in the future for companies will be able to utilize it.

remember when they use to say a gigabyte hard drive will never be needed? or 1ghz CPU was ridiculously fast? Or how the new Floppy disks was smaller slimmer and can store a whole 1.44mb of data?

Before we know it 80 Cores CPUs will be outdated! Mabe in the future they'll find a new kind of transistor and will go back to single core CPU with a terahz performance! And then even later, back to multi-core CPU running 3thz! :P

The future of processors is already decided. Computer components aren't released to the public as they're developed, they're released in the order that is most profitable. i.e., if they skip any "developments" they lose a lot of money because everyone only has to upgrade once.

That doesn't work. In the few situations where it might, yuo'd have to be running some job that could be highly processed in parallel. Right now, there's not a lot that can be.

This is for the theoretical future remember?

As for the guy that said the future of processors is already decided for us, I can buy that to an extent since many companies in all sorts of industries do this. But then again, why aren't AMD and Intel neck and neck more? Why is AMD currently losing TONS of money right now? Because the future isn't decided, or there's some seriously messed up stuff/deals going on in the background.
