I'm having a common problem with with Windows 7 auto updates. I have 55 pending updates, my laptop takes an age to shut down and then all updates fail. I'm having to do cold shut downs all the time. The error code I get is 80070057. I've googled but other peoples solutions don't work.

Things I've tried are: Renaming Software Distribution folder in C: didn't work. all it does is create a new folder to replace the renamed one.
Installing a Windows update agent (supposed to fix this error)didn't work.
Installing Microsoft standalone update package readiness tool. (also for this particular problem) Didn't work.
Ive tried installing updates individually. I picked several random updates, all failed, so isn't a particular update thats the cause.
Ive tried all the usual stuff (turning off firewall antivirus etc) nothing works.

My PC is win7 32bit. Ive had this problem in the past but its always sorted itself out before.

Nah didn't work. Followed exactly but to no avail, still failing to update. Seemingly a serious problem then. Thanks though!

Tried what you said. But the scan fails and won't complete. Unable to complete operation. Dunno. Pissed off right now. Don't know what else to do.

I would find out what brand of hard drive you have and run the manufacturers disk diagnostic software on it to verify the drive is good. If it passes the long test, then a reinstall of windows is necessary.

To resolve this problem, perform the System File Checker scan in safe mode, and make sure that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%\WinSxS\Temp.
