Hi, i currently have a 8400gs and it has woked great for me,i dont play high demanding games, just mostly racing games, and some combat games, so it suites that purpose very well...So anyway i am thinking of upgrading it to an 8600gt this christmas, would it be worth it?

specs.
5200+ x2
2gigs of 800mhz ram
250gig drive
420watt psu
8400gs

Would i be able to put this card in with a 420watt psu?(it is an off-brand, so i was wondering if it would be ok?)

Would there be a fairly decent performance gain?

And if you have an better suggestions please feel free:)

thx for you time:)

You wouldn't really see a dramatic increase in performance if your going from a 8400GS to a 8600GT. The 8600GT is better don't get me wrong but you'll just be switching a low end card for another low end card. I've been a martyr for the radeon 4850 lately but the 9800 is pretty comparable in performance and the 9800 is a few dollars cheaper. All depends on your preference. Check out these charts and look for the 4850 and the 9800 GT and make your decision http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/benchmarks,30.html

^so your saying that i would barely know the difference from the 8600gt from the 8400gs?Seems hard to believe for me...
Ya, i would like to upgrade to those but i dont want to upgrade my psu for this...
Does anyone known a better card that can fit in a 420watt psu?

step up to a 8800GT,theyre getting alot cheaper now because of the release of the 9 series, dotn get em wrong you would probably would see quite some diffrence going to a 8600GT from what you have now but personaly i wouldnt go for anything lower than a 8800GT these days.

^Agreed. Get at least a 8800GT. Up here in Canada, even I've seen a 9800GT from EVGA go below $110.

You would be surprised. Before I had an 8500GT, switched it out for a 8600GT, MUCH better. Now I have the 8600GTS.

Yes, that PSU will handle it.

Considering what 8600gt's go for these days if you can find a buyer for your old card it would def be worth it because it would cost you so little in the end.
