8600GTS Fan Problem

The fan on my 8600GTS seems to be stuck at around 30%. I think it's been stuck at that the whole time I've had it, I just noticed it recently cause I just recently started monitoring my temps. My card idles at about 60 C and gets to so far a max of 82C at load. I've tried using rivatuner to change the speeds, and most of the time it will change for about 3 seconds then go back to 30%. Sometimes it will stick at the 100% I set it to, but as soon as I start a game it reverts back to 30%. I've researched it in google and it seems to be a widespread problem with the 8600GTS in particular, regardless of the brand that makes it. I couldn't find an answer anywhere, so I'm leaving it up to the guru's to help me. I really don't like the idea of having 80* load temps...

Help would be awesome, though buying a new video card isn't totally out of the equation
 
idles at 60c ....damn i think you should get a new cooler on it.

my 8800GT idles at around 40c and goes to 55-60c when gaming.
 
That is high, but then I don't know what's the norm for those cards...

Did you try clicking 'Save' under the fan options, then 'Apply' and then, 'Ok'?

If it's any help mines idle at 38c and load at 57c.

If you are after a new card, I really recommend the GTS, it's a brilliant OC'er. :)
 
Yep, clicked save, apply, apply on startup, the whole works. It always results in either a 3 second fan change or a fan change until I start a game. I would get the 8800 GTS, but would it be worth it in switching from an 8600GTS? I bought this thing less than 5 months ago and would really like it to be a significant increase from what I have. Also cost is a huge issue, I wouldn't like to spend more than $200 CDN, $250 max. I hear there is the new Radeon 4xxx series and theres apparantly a new Nvidia series in the works. I debating whether or not I should wait for those...

Nevakonaza, I would get a new cooler but I have a feeling I would have the same problem with it being stuck at only 30%

I dont know why Rivatuner won't work. Have you tried nVidia's Ntune? I think it can change the fan too.

Ooooh, Yeah. Dude, you'd see a difference going to a GTS. It'd be a big increase!

The 9 Series just came out, so I don't know when the new stuff will come out.
What about a HD3870? You'd see a big increase with that too, it's just under the GT.

The prices aren't as great as I expected, but it does seem to be a little lower than NCIX. I'll see, I'll be waiting for my tax return to get it:P
 
Ooh, nice, thanks. Is MSI an alright brand? I've bookmarked this one. If it's still the best deal when I get my tax return I'm so buying it:D
 
Yays! I have it, now I just have to wait till work is over to install it:D I'm so excited, this would be my first video card thats not midrange!

Only problem is I bought smash brothers brawl today too. Choices choices, what to play first!
