8800 gts or gtx?

i'm contemplating buying either the 8800 gts or gtx. there's almost a $200 difference between the 2 cards.

does the performance increase justify the price difference? i will eventually be running 2 of them in sli, but i also realize that i'm gonna need a better psu, which i can buy with the money i can save buy getting the gts.

this build is gonna take me some time, so i'm not in a hurry, but i'd like to know if there's that big of a difference between the 2.

I could tell you a few jokes about SLI setups not seeing the great performance gain as advertized. But the $200 saved could still used towards a faster cpu, better or more memory, a top sound card rather then onboard, a case with extra cooling like increased air flow, water cooling, or even an air conditioned model. Why $200 away for... ? nothing The games will still run on an $80 card!

first, tell me a faster 939 cpu than what's in my sig, second, tell me better memory i could get rather than my 2 gig's of corsair 2-2-2-5, then tell me about how much of an improvement an x-fi soundcard would be over my audigy 2zs platinum. after that, you could recommend a better case than my lian li that i have now.

i'm not gonna be looking at sli for at least a half a year, so that's not my main concern. what i'm concerned with is, if the gtx is $200 better than the gts. i know i will need a better psu, and i am currently looking at a 750w model. i just want comparisons, not recommendations on what else i could spend my money on. thanks for the reply though.

I'm with PC eye on this one. An extra 200 now (or 400 if you buy both) is a lot better and the performance difference isn't going to be that much.

The latest reviews seen point out the actual lack of gain seen performance wise. The real benefit most are looking at with dual cards is multiple monitor application. Even if you use a Y adapter for dual monitors the second Y gives you a four monitor setup while still taxing the cards.

Before deciding between two models with that large a price gap try "price comparison" and a good look at other makes and model cards. The high price seen on most cards is for first buyers with extra cash to throw around. A smart shopper steps back and says wait a minute! Shopping sites like nextag, become, shopping.com, bizrate, and others often beat newegg's own prices.

Check the benchmarks on the web. I have a GTS. I like it. At first I wasn't impressed but now I am starting to be. The GTX would be a lot faster in most games. It's really about your budget.

I have an air conditioned case for sale.

I would go with the GTS. After some overclocking I got my GTS to perform better then the GTX stock, but of course, thats a stock GTX

Are you kidding ?

You need to overclock the clock speed of GTS to more than 700MHz and memory speed more than 2100MHz in order to perform equally to 8800GTX. Also, you can't overclock the video memory from 640MB to 768MB:P

So, there is no way to overclock GTS to GTX speed

I overclocked my 8800GTS to 660/1970 (500/1600 stock)

And my setup did perform better in benchmarks then other members here who had an E6600/X6800 and an 8800GTX at stock.

I havent personally used SLI, but I swear i've seen people with dual-monitor setups that have SLI. I know you cant use 4 monitors, but I thought you could use two... maybe im wrong
You can only use 1 monitor in SLI mode. If you want duals you need a nonnvidia card to drive the 2nd.

8800GTX will still have higher memory bandwidth than 8800GTS, even if you overclock it to 1970MHz

1970MHz x 320 = 78.8 GB/sec
1800MHz x 384 = 86.4 GB/sec

And even if you overclock the clock speed of 8800GTS to 660MHz, it will still have lower fillrate than 8800GTX

There is no way for 8800GTS (660/1970) to perform better than 8800GTX at stock. And if you want to see how good your overclocked 8800GTS compared to 8800GTX then you must test them on the same exact computer with same exact specs. And I'm sure that 8800GTX will beat your overclocked GTS

you're forgetting you're comparing your oced cpu to 3.1ghz to the e6600 stock 2.4ghz and that was in 3dmark06 i think.:)
