Is a Nvidia 8800GTS a better card than a ATI HD 2900XT?

Depends if you are referring to the 8800GTS 320/640MB (G80) or the 8800GTS 512MB (G92).

The 3870X2 is the best gaming card out now (as you stated), so it's not fair to make a statement such as "nVidia is better then ATI at gaming".

As I said in the previous post, to tell which one is better we would need to know if he has the original G80-based version, or the newer G92.

Well you know I run ATI models here and still do some zombie blasting with the HD 2600XT MSI card.

Then yes, the HD2900XT would be a little-moderately better. Although, the 512MB version of the 8800GTS beats the HD2900XT.

Why? are you planning on buying the HD2900XT? If so, you'd be better off with the newer HD3870 it is a tad faster than the HD2900XT and consumes less power.

Either one would give you just a little boost on FPS depending on game. Maybe 10-15+

I really don't know, wild guess.

Depends on which version of Windows you are running. The 3800s are geared towards Vista more then XP.

I tend to lean towards the HD 2900XT for XP and Vista for the newer models while eventually you will likely upgrade for seeing DX10 at some point.
