my PNY 8800gt has started making some loud fan noises. kid of like the fan is under strain and something is in the way. Any ideas what could be going on?

yeah its above normal so its not just stock cooler being loud i cleaned all the dust out and sound stopped maybe thats what it was

8800GT stock cooler sucks. Try taking a duster and blowing out the heatsink, it might be clogged up.

Pfft the hell it does! My stock fan is a champion. You just have to clean them out every 2-3 months like with every part on your PC.

Also my stock gets loud after 70% I can hear it over my Antec 900 case (fans on medium)

Well right now now my passive Accelero S1 is keeping my 8800gt about 5 degrees cooler than the stock.

5c isn't worth 30 bucks for me ^-^.

If I attached all the spare ram heatsinks onto the plate and put a 120mm fan blowing upwards I too could drop my temps. I did it on a friends 8800GT and he about died laughing at how cheap I am and how well it did.

Still 42c idle is not bad without doing it. I hardly get over 55c on hot days.

Yeah but the 8800GT was the loudest part of my computer (even on idle), so it really needed to go :).

Ah a noise hater...I am blessed by being able to tune out sound. I use to run 4 35DB 110CFM 120mm fans. 1 year of that and nothing is annoying on a PC. :P

I would be tempted to buy it and overclock it...but they need to kill the price or add free shipping all ready ^-^

yea its around 30 % speed but even if i change speed that noise just changes pitch. and it only started making this much noise lately

Unless you have an extremely silent computer, then it must be your fan (bearing, oil etc.) I consider my computer for be fairly silent and I can't even hear my GPU fan until it breaks 45%. You could look into an aftermarket cooler if you had the budget. The 8800GT definitely needs one.
