Hi guys, well i want to know if i buy the 8800gt and only plan to play it in 17' monitor, would the 256mb version enough?
Is the memory amount only to play at higher resolution?
I want to know also since im playing crysis, because as i know the amount of memory also take effect not only for resolution but also for graphic setting like texture, shadow, object, etc.
So can the 8800gt 256mb version sufficient to play crysis with all high setting?

Even at the resolution, 256mb version of the 8800GT will hurt in crysis. But for the most part i think 256 would be OK. I personally would look into the 512 version or HD 3870

Certain games will respond differently, take a look at the benchmarks. Personally, I think the 8800gt 512Mb or the 3870 are the ones to go with, as future games will hit the 256mb variant even harder, creating a bigger performance gap, a bigger bottleneck. Besides it's only, like, $50 bucks more.

All graphics cards will eventually become old and slow with newer games, but it seems as though the minimum resolution requirements of new games are the last things to move up.

In I dunno how many years of gaming, minimum resolutions have only moved from 320 x (some small number) to 800 x 600 (current minimum resolution requirement for cards). And 256MB is pretty hefty, I remember not too long ago when 128MB was amazing. Of course standards change, but resolution requirements and memory are changing slower. In contrast, graphics are evolving alot faster, so it is more likely that the GPU on the card will become outdated before the memory on your video card starts to inhibit your ability to play newer games.

On the other hand, if you hate playing games lower than 1600 x 1200, you will need the 512MB version.

It's not the resolution that effects the 256mb version so negatively, it's the fact that the textures that are stored on the VRAM are getting more varied, more detailed, generally larger, and the like. You're right that the resolution is a very static aspect aspect of PC gaming, but even more reliant on video memory is the pre-mentioned textures.

Hell the 256mb version of the GT struggles on Bioshock, 1280 x 1024, when compared to it's 512mb kin.. 256mb of VRAM is no longer good enough to keep up with the latest cards and the latest games.

Hmm i see, well hopefully i can get extra money to buy the 8800gt 512mb version instead of the 256mb one :-P
Btw thanx for the input.
