Could someone please explain to me the significance of these numbers? I know they have to do with the video cards memory but are they really extremely important? I ask this because I need a new video card for my new PC and since im a minor with my dads credit card, I want to know what provides the most bang for my buck. I will be playing the latest games on this comp like COD4, Crysis (if i ever get around to buying it), and im hoping for it to hold out for the next 3 years of video games. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

the 320 and 640 mb ones are the older g80 core.

the 512mb is the newer g92 core and is way better.

for you i would recommend the 8800 GT 512 mb. its the best bang for buck :)

but if performance wise. the 8800GTS 512mb is the best.

8600GT < 8600GTS < 8800 320MB/640MB < HD3870 < 8800GS/HD3870/8800GT < 8800GTX/HD3870x2 < 8800GTS G92 < 8800Ultra

No idea where the 9600 falls in this line... Probably with the GS?

the 8800GS is the intel equivelent the the HD3850 and the 9600GT is the equivelent to the HD3870.

well at least thats what i think :)

ok so then 512mb it is, thanks :) is there anything else I need to look for in a mobo to be compatible with the graphics card besides the PCI express x16 slot?

if you can get a motherboard with pci-e X16 version 2.0 you might see a performance increase there too, and that type of slot is usually found on 790FX boards for AMD and on X38 and X48 boards for intel

Phew, thats a relief. I was looking at memory that had DDR2 1200 and it was in the hundreds for 2GB ><, the computer I want needs to be within 600-700 dollars. Since I already know what graphics card im gonna get, I guess Ill move my discussion to the motherboard forum, Ill also be on memory, cpu, and maybe even PSU if they have one trying to get this computer together. Thanks for all your help guys, Im one step closer :)
