8800GTS Brand Differences?

Hello, this is my first post! Yipee!

I am looking to buy an 8800GTS card, but I've noticed there are some huge price discrepancies between brands. For example, there is a Hewlett Packard 8800GTS card for sale (refurbished) at $250 (video card only), and ASUS offers an 8800GTS card with the same specs for $400.

Am I missing some critical piece of information here? Shouldn't an 8800GTS be the same performancewise across any brand? Also, would it be a good idea to grab the 8800GTS by HP?

For 250 bucks you should buy an 8800GT. As far as brands go I would suggest EVGA or XFX. The benefit of EVGA is the step-up program. I would not buy any video card from HP.
 
Within 3 months time should you decided to upgrade your video card to a new one, IE the new G92 8800 GTS, you only have the pay the price difference of the cards and shipping.

Second, the performance between brands does change but only by a very little. Some brands produce over clocked cards as opposed to selling the cards with original specs. For example XFX makes cards with different clocks which aren't really noticeable but do change performance. In this example, XFX makes the regular base video card and they also sell Extreme and the XXX versions which are respectively faster.

And now the disclaimer :D

I would suggest you get the 8800GT instead, it is currently cheaper than the 8800GTS and performs more like the 8800GTX. Or you could wait until mid December I reckon when the new 8800GTS come out which I would think will be faster than both the current 8800GT and the 8800GTS.

I recommend you wait until Dec 3rd and get the new 8800GTS with the G92 core. Performance will be better than the current GTX, as the GT is currently nipping at its heals. Go with EVGA, they let you overclock and swap in aftermarket coolers and keep your warranty.

Expect G92'd GTX/Ultra cards to run at their current price.

Brand matters only in the quality of the build/components, customer service (though this is also very highly chaotic), and vender specific deal and promotions. While it's unlikely that a lesser known brand will simply malfunction or break, it is possible that that lesser known brand is more susceptible to such faults. I usually recommend EVGA first, all things considered. I just wouldn't count out any brand, especially if they're considerably cheaper, and don't have an ass track record.
 
the new GP2 you think are going to be less than 300? I was thinking of getting a 8800GT, but if the new GTS are going to be cheap should I wait?
 
G92? I think the G92 GTS will be around $300-350, give or take, depending on it's performance. I also think the wait will be worth it, but with EVGA's step-up program, you could just buy the GT, and trade it in for the GTS if it fits your mold. And if it's released within the 90 days, which is always a worry when planning on the step-up program.
 
I don't quite understand, how can the GT be better than the GTS? Is the video card letter system different than cars or something? Does this rule apply to all other cards where GT is better than GTS?
 
lately the rules have gone out the window. the GT is now better then the current GTS but in awhile (maybe) the GTS will once again be better. the GTX however is still the most powerful, even though there are rumors of the GTS tailing it very closely
