9400M... 1080p capable?

I am off to college next year and my brother (who works at the apple store) really wants me to get a MacBook. I know the MacBooks do not have a dedicated video card though, and the ones that do are really expensive. I was looking at the current baseline MacBook Pro which has the 9400M and the 2.26Ghz processor. I would use it to output 1080p video onto our HDTV.

Would it be capable? I often do this with my brothers and dad's laptops, and theirs have 8600GT's.

The MBP's do have a dedicated video card. They also sport 9600mGT's that can be turned on or off (i.e. switched betwen the 9400 & 9600) easily. The 9600 is slightly more powerful than the 8600 too :) If you mean the MacBook 13" then the 9400 is capable of 1080p yes.

Actually today they "updated" their lineup, so the former 13" aluminum macbook is now being called the MacBook Pro.

I'm trying to decide whether it would be worth it to get a higher model that does have the 9600m GT, but right now it doesn't seem worth it at all.

As for being 1080p capable, let me specify. I want to output it onto the TV screen, so it will essentially be powering two displays including one with HD video, not just output normal stuff at 1080p resolution. Will the 9400M really be capable for this? If it is, that makes my decision very easy.

Hmm... for hd video thats a tough one... You would be best off with 9600m gt one, but the 9400M would get by for just video... Not any kinda games or anything though.

yeah, projecting games onto the HDTV would almost surely be a no-go, but I'm pretty sure 1080p video will work too.
