ok im in the process of building a machine, mostly for games, bit of movies and stuff but my question is when i was looking for video cards at my local shop i saw a:

1) Asus ATI Radeon 9600 SE/128MB DDRATI/DVI/TV-Out/AGP 8X = AU$155
2) ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256M DDR TVO DVI-I = AU$325

what is the difference??

is the asus always faster? , which will be better for games, the faster asus or the larger ram on the sapphire?

ive read benchmarks and stuff but i can never find info on the 256mb sapphire

help appreciated.
;)

The SE version uses a half the bandwidth of the regular one... there are four models to the 9600, they are, in order (from lest performer to top performer):
- 9600SE
- 9600
- 9600Pro
- 9600XT
Thus of the two, the 9600XT is a far superior performer

Thanks Praetor that cleared up alot

So the xt is best, but what about the difference between sapphire and asus? i get confused between these manufacturers

and in my case is it worth paying the extra for the 9600xt 256mb version as Opposed to the 128mb xt version

what about the difference between sapphire and asus?
Sapphire is the budget arm for ATI chips while ASUS traditionally make very high end cards. To be honest there is very little realworld differences in performance of the Sapphire card compared to any other. The only "problems" you can encounter with them is that the (safe) OC ceiling isnt so high

i personally like ASUS cards better. but i have seen Sapphire cards clock higher..so its really all up to you. sapphire cards are certainly not BAD cards...but just not as high quality as ASUS cards. ASUS does include cool looking HSF's too..i like those alot.

Yeah but just remember all that fanciness comes at an additional cost: you might consider an ATI9600XT instead of the ASUS version; probably cheaper :)

yes at newegg i believe ATI brand is cheaper than most others.

The 9600XT is the faster of the 2 but you can have an ATI HIS Excalibur ICEq 9800 Pro with 128 megs, it even has heat sinks on the memory chips. It will walk all over either of the other two for $239. It has a wonderful heatsink and fan that will let you push it to just under 9800XT specs.

For some reason i dont like "plastic" looking heatsink fans heehee

me neither...and i havent really seen "high-tech" brand getting high clocks anywhere. THIS CARD seems to be pretty popular, has a nice heatsink, and is like $3 cheaper lol. but whatever you want...its up to you.

HIS Excalibur ICEq 9800 Pro bench test, this an easy to overclock card. My core is clocked at 432 mhz and my memory clock is at 380.25 and its completely stable. I could set it a little higher if I needed to. Even the memory chips have a heat sink on them.
Yeah I know ... and I'm sure the card is more than adequately cooled ... prolly just me ... I'm finicky :P

yea thanks guys but the problem i have with the links you gave me is that i cannot buy them being from Australia, they all just ship to the US like most places on the net, dare i say. but thanks anywayss

maybe i should try to find an aussie forum??

Ya another trend I notice is that (shipping aside), prices outside of North America are noticeably more expensive ... so adjust your expectations/budgets accordingly :)

Huge thanks ian, just pieced together an entire computer form computer world and it was very cheap, thanks for the tip.

oh and for the record i went for the asus 9600xt,

thanku all for your helpful advise

they have a store in york st in the city which is where i go to, but they also have a very big store at concord which is on the site of an ex nissan dealership.

Gigabite sells 9600 XT under the name of 9600pro-ultra but much cheaper!!!!!!!

n short :i bought a v. card from Gigabyte: a strange one:

only trouble till now

the model is radeon 9600pro-ULTRA yes it is correct and never seen before:ultra
the difference between this ultra and the pro is +100mhz core clock on ultra:
500/600 ultra
400/600 pro

the strangeness goes on: the card should have a RV350 core!!
instead has RV 360 ---JUST LIKE XT

see the entire 9600 pro family including this odd breed: GV-R96P128DU:-u from ultra !!
http://tw.giga-byte.com/VGA/Product...deon9600PRO.htm

i quote:4 parallel rendering pipelines process up to 1.3G pixels per second

a have run RIVATUNER 2.0 and AIDA 32 his is the result :RV 360
PIXEL FILLRATE:2000 M pixel/s
textel fillrate:2000 Mtextel/s

lock on this review with a more strange GV-R96P128DU :http://www.amddiyoc.com/giga/r9600ultra/test.htm

note: mine is the one from GIGABYTE's web pege not the one with the big cooler from review

want people to know that gigabiyte appearantly replace that 9600pro-ultra chip set (the one from review, with that bbbiiiggg cooler) with a chip set from 9600 xt and a regular cooler

see the results from review:you will see aida32 showing the speciffication:
true for that card (with the big cooler) but on mine is written:GV-R96P128D-ultra

true story :when i bought it i freeked out becouse the merchant didn't gave me the card with the big cooler
he showed me on the gigabyte 's web page the picture with the card i bought

another wierd thing:on the box appears v-tuner with hardwere monitor:on the soft from cd. v tuner can only c.c ,mot monitor.
so i downloaded another v tuner:same thing:can't monitor!
