9800 GTX @ Newegg ($329)

That is a really nice price.

And Danny, it happens! You can now get an HD3870 for $180 US, I got mine for $250!

i think im still eligible for the steup program. you ever done that before mike? from what i understand you just send in your old card, pay the difference, and they mail you the new one? sounds easy enough, i just dont know if i could survive without a video card for a couple weeks

Yeah, I stepped up my GTXes to the Ultras. If you haven't already, register your card with eVGA. You pay the difference between your cost and what they charge at eVGA ($339). They give you a number of shipping options (that you have to pay, of course) for the replacement card, so it's up to you how long you want to wait.

Anyway, I highly recommend it. ;)

329?!oh man,that's what I call a real buy!

but I heard about that 9900 is coming out in about July...

Seems its only a bit better than the 8800GTS :(

...But its still a step up from my ooooooooold gts.

9800GTX has better overclocking potential than GTS 512, so no they are not same thing. 9800GTX overclocked to its max would still be better than GTS 512 overclocked to its Max

At stock speeds, 9800GTX performs almost as as 8800Ultra

Not to mention that 9800GTX supports 3-way SLI and HybridPower technology

From your link:

"One thing jumps out at you right away - the similarity between the 9800 GTX and the 8800 GTS 512 MB. They share the same GPU (G92), number of texturing units, memory, features and so on. The only difference is the 9800 GTX' slightly higher operating frequencies, resulting in processing power that's a little less than 4% higher..."

Not exactly a NEW card that is outstandingly different is it, that justifies the 9 badge?

oh, and yes, if you are idiotic enough to buy 3, and an new motherboard, and a new psu, then yes, you can use 3 together.

It should have been the 8900GT or something.

Did you read the entire review? The 4% processing power came out to be more than that in actually applications.

Chances are, if you're willing to buy a high-end card, you want performance. If you want performance, you'll usually be willing to overclock. Then the 9800GTX becomes much better than the 8800.

Regarding the similarity between the 9800GTX and the 8800GTS (in addition to what i mentioned previously):

"The 9800 GTX was 2fps faster than the 512MB 8800 GTS in Need for Speed: Pro Street..."

"We saw little performance difference between the 9800 GTX and the 512MB 8800 GTS in Call of Duty 4."

"The 9800 GTX was 1fps quicker than the 512MB 8800 GTS..." in Crysis

Overclocking:

"Overclocking did little to increase the appeal of the 9800 GTX. Using nTune, we could only squeeze an extra 15MHz out of the GPU, raising it to 690MHz, and another 75MHz from the memory, boosting it to 1.175GHz (2.35GHz effective). This provided an extra 2-3fps..."

Their conclusion:

"We’re not sure how the new 9800 GTX card merits its GeForce 9-series status – it looks like it should be a GeForce 8900 GTS at best. With performance so close to that of the 512MB 8800 GTS, it would only be worth buying if it were cheaper. Even the cheapest 9800 GTX card costs around £45 more than a 512MB GeForce 8800 GTS, which is a scandal on Nvidia’s part. It looks suspiciously as though the company is cynically marketing a slightly updated 512MB 8800 GTS GPU as a next-generation 9-series GPU in order to fool you into upgrading. If you have a powerful GeForce 8800-series card (anything bar the old 320MB and 640MB GTS cards), stick with it for now; a 9800 GTX isn’t worth buying".
