9800GTX not all that great (stats)

So the new 9800GTX should be out next week and I did some research and the baseline stats aren't all that great unless I'm missing something.

It's only got 512 MB of memory, with a memory bandwidth of about 70.4 GB/S. That is only marginally better than a 8800GTS g92.

If they were making another GTX why did they only use 256bit memory instead of the 384 bit memory found in the 8800GTX?

The 8800GTX has an older g80 core, a much slower clock speed yet, has almost a 10 GB/S advantage in memory bandwidth. And I'm not even comparing the 8800 ultra here, just the standard GTX. I think Nvidia dropped the ball on this series of cards. I really want to see some benchmarks when these cards come out.

If they had to introduce a whole new name series (9xxx) why didn't they make a card worthy of a new series.

It doesn't look good, the GX2 at $600 is slightly ahead of the 3870X2 ($400) and is having problems with AA in some games, which is probably bad drivers. All i know is that they better do something, these are going to be hard to sell with the givin price tag. because i sure don't see a $200 increase in performance of the x2..

Priced around $349 (supposedly), the GTX isn't a bad deal. But yeah, I'd like to see how it performs against the 8xxx G92 series. I've heard there may be a few 1GB models as well.

If the 9800GTX is going to cost almost $100 more than the 8800GTX, then I think it's a waste of money, and waste of development on Nvidia's part. The 9xxx series should have been superior to the 8xxx series, similar to how the 8xxx series destroyed the 7xxx series.

That's an excellent point and I agree. F*ck nVidia. :)

Um...thats not quite what was I was going for. I'm still going with nVidia for my build, because it's still superior to anything ATI puts out... ;)

But still, not impressed at all with this latest 9xxx series. If they do make a 10xxx it had better be godlike.

It's hard to say...I mean, some technic things that we dont know are always out there somewhere.you can not just tell the performance from a few simple spec numbers announced by nvidia.

There seems to be no increase in performance with PCIe 2.0, I'm not really sure what the advantage is. All "PCIe 2.0" cards are compatible with "PCIe 1.0" boards.

That is not correct.

PCIe 2.0 is backwards compatiable with 1.1 revision. However, although rare, some are not always with 1.0a. There are several references to this, including from the manufacturers, and this is why many are releasing bios updates for their PCIe 2.0 cards, that effectively makes them PCIe 1 cards (thus compatiable).
