9800XT to X700 pro power?

Hey, I just bought a 9800 Pro from Sapphire and flashed it to XT, and I hear from people that they have overclocked it WAY further, like 840mhz memory speeds and 450mhz processor clockrates. So do any of you guys know how far I can overclock it? They say this is a great card to overclock, and seeing as how it's still more expensive than the X700 Pro, it's gotta have some potential. Can you tell me if it can outdo an X700 Pro, because I'm almost sure it can, especially if it's fillrate is so close to the X700's already. The only thing I'm looking at is the Geometry rate, the X700 can do 1.5 times more than the 9800, but I'm hoping I'll be able to do that too. Thanks.

By the way, I'm not sure how I would do this because the 15 day thing is already done I'm pretty sure, but should I just by an X700 if I can't overclock it?

I myself am a huge ATI fan, but if I had to decide between an X700 and a 9800 Pro...I might start rethinking manufactures...your right I am going to haft to sway towards nVidia. With the 6600GT also known as the "9800 Pro Killer", This card not only kicks the 9800 Pro's ass but also eats the X700 in benchmarks...the only way u can climb over the 6600 GT's performance is if you reach the X800 Series...A far superior line of card including 16 Rendering Pipelines, GDDR3, etc. They have released an X800XL AGP version recently that you should probaly look into...it is a cut down version of an X800XT and in benchmarking only comes up 3-8% slower then an XT. So if I can offer any suggestions it would be to go with the 6600GT or an X800XL. You won't see much of a performance difference going from 9800Pro (Flashed to XT) to a X700...

Alright, well thanks man, you're the 2nd guy that's told me that. I'll definitely look into these 6600's, and hopefully I'll be able to get one. I got an Nforce 2 mobo anyway, so this might work out even better. Thanks again.

One more thing, do you guys have any benchmark comparisons you can get? I've been looking everywhere for them and I have no idea where to go.

The 9800 is inferior to most modern cards now. It is by no means a bad card, but cards of a newer series ( IE: 6600s, x800s, 6800's, etc) will out perform it for nearly the same price. A 6600gt, 6800, or X800xl will woop the pants off of it. If you have really good cooling ,you might be able to match an x700. Don't hold me to it thouhg, Good luck.

Well the 9800 (if that what you litterally meant) was circa GeForce4-Ti4600. Now if you meant the 9800Pro/XT than its a different issue: i wouldnt say the 6600 poses much of a threat (nor significant upgrade route) for a 9800Pro/XT.

A well tunned 9800Pro should be able to match a X700 for most things (and the 9800XT more easily) ... the significant boost to the 9800Pro/XT's meory bandwidth definitely helps

Thank you Praetor, I was starting to lose confidence in my decision for a minute there. Yeah I was talking about the 9800XT, and I just read a review with a guy that OC'ed his memory to 880mhz and processor to 428mhz, which (I haven't seen specs on what it can do) I would assume kills the X700 and compares(?) to the 6600GT.

Oh yeah, I know anyone can tell me this but I want to make sure. If you don't have an official ATI or Nvidia card, can you still use an official Catalyst? If not, do you need to download it from the company that built it's website? Because Sapphire releases their own, and I don't know which one to download (theirs is only 5.3, ATI released 5.4). Thanks for all the help guys.

The X700XT which is now discontinued, compares to the 6600GT (at least marketwise). Performancewise the 6600GT tends to win-out however there are a handful of surprises where the X700XT totally owns the 6600GT. The 6600GT is for all intents and purposes, a replacement for the 9800* however if you've already got a 9800Pro/XT theres hardly reason IMO to fork out $200 for the 6600GT (after considering the price of the 9800Pro/XT) ... you'd notice a more significant jump by going to NV41 :)

Yes
