98se updates

I have put 98se on an old PC after reformatting. I know that the windows update website no longer supports 98 but I could trawl through the archives to find the updates. As I am using dial-up downloading is a tedious procedure.
Is there a good resource that will tell me what essential updates I should look for?
Thanks.

What do you need by updating the windows 98se? You can clearly knowing the necessary updates through microsoft website.

Sorry, I thought MS no longer supported 98 so the windows update was not possible - but I was wrong.

i think they mean that there not making new updates, but i believe you can still get older updates.

yup, thats how ms does it, in fact, they either just recently, or pretty soon will stop making updates for 2k.

and they dont make updates for the original windows xp, now its only for win xp with sp1 or sp2.

wouldnt we consider sp1 and sp2 updates too tho? they are available at windows updates.

SP1 and SP2 are a bunch of updates bundles together... many updates build on the previous update.. and a lot of updates fix previous mistakes caused by updates...

I think the last time Microsoft put out a 98se update was in 2001. Why would they continue to update an old product when they wanted you to upgrade to ME a long time ago?

Nah... when vista comes out, a few years later, they will stop making updates for XP as well...

MS Should Keep Supporting Their Os

I think MS should support their operating systems no matter what. Lots of other people still use the older stuff too ya know.

If it worked properly in the first place... MERCHANTABILITY etc.. Ya wouldn't need too
waste your computing time, being probed by the MICROSOFT POLICE...

We, as customers wish many companies did things to benefit us more.. But the fact is, companies do not have the resources to indefinitely support older products. While Microsoft can support a product for a lot longer because of their resources, they wisely (business common sense) choose not to.

The focus of ANY company is to get business from new customers.. AND get returning customers....

A new OS will get the new customers; but if you adequately support an older product some of the returning customers wont be there.

And I suppose that you will sleep alright knowing that our defence systems are being controlled by WINDOWS 2000!!!

as far as i know, you can still use windows update for win 98 and get patches and fixes, but that they dont make any new ones.
