A few dual booting questions

I have XP currently installed but i kinda wanna install vista so i have it for the newer DX 10 games. My question is that if i install both of them, if i'm say in XP will there be anything to do with vista running in the background? or vice versa? Would any programs that run in XP automatically run when i use Vista like my anti virus software and such?

Or is it basically just like having two computers, where you have to set up everything for each operating system and nothing carries over to the other system?

when you're using XP vista is down...offline...and vice versa, you can't turn both of them on to use.
No programs in xp wont automatically run in vista.
I have never tried actually executing a program that was already install on an xp partition in vista....probably you'll get errors or so
