So, I just recently purchased a computer from www.stealthmachines.com. You may remember me asking about the right parts and such on here a while back. Happy to say that it's here and great! It runs Gears of War, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 on max settings like a charm. Ironically, it's also quieter and even lighter than my old setup!
Here's the info on it:
Case - COOLER MASTER Centurion
Motherboard - ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
Memory - CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Optical Drive - 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM
Hard Drive - 250GB SATA 7,200RPM w/ 16MB Cache
Graphics Cards - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate
Sound Card - Internal Sound Card (Built Into Motherboard)
Power Supply - 600W Thermaltake Power Supply
However, I have one problem. It only detects 3GB of my 4GB of RAM! At first I thought this might be a problem with Vista, as I hear it can be iffy, but I'm running the 64 bit edition so I don't see where that would be a problem. So, I went to check my BIOS configuration, and it seems even my BIOS is only seeing 3070MB of physical RAM! I've heard to update the BIOS, but considering that this computer is new (I got it this month), I'd think it would be up to date. On top of that, I have no floppy drive, and I've heard updating your BIOS in Windows is suicide. Another thing I've heard is to turn on "memory remapping", but the BIOS doesn't have that setting! Do you know what could be causing this, and more importantly, how to fix it?
Two other questions, though. What would be a good setting for my Virtual memory? I hear 1.5x Physical RAM is the standard, but it wouldn't hurt to set it higher, right? Would I get anything else out of that?
Finally, I'm not really that interested in OCing, because I'm not quite a tech wiz yet and I don't want to fry my brand new computer. But, if I can squeeze a decent amount of extra performance out of my system with little work and no risk, I wouldn't mind. Is this possible?
Thanks!
