A Good Graphics Card for this Motherboard?

Hi people - This is my first thread :D

I consider myself not quite as informed as others when it comes to hardware, despite the fact that i'm studying Computer Science at University - hence the reason why I joined this nice forum...

So - to the point..

I've just recently bought an XPS 8000 PC, hold your applause..no really..

It's a pretty awesome machine considering i'm a student and my age. I'm thinking of upgrading the graphics card since Dell always throws in cheap 512MB, standard GPU based GC's.

Since I have a XPS 8000 i7, with 4GB 1067 RAM - what would you consider as a descent graphics card for me? It would have to obviously be compatible with my Motherboard. My budget is £75-80. I'm not a serious gamer, although i'm thinking of purchasing Starcraft II - Looks slightly promising...(slightly)...

I bought the Machine on eBay and it's suppose to come to my house today or tomorrow at the latest! I'll post the type of Motherboard on here as soon as I get the chance.

For now, here's the specification:

Processor: Intel Core i7-860 (2.80GHz,8MB,L3 Cache)
Memory :4198MB 1067MHz DDR3
Media Card Reader : 19-in-1 Media Card Reader
Hard Drive : 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
Optical Drive : 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
Graphics Card : 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350

So yeah - please shed some light on this topic!

P.s. I'm a UK citizen, therefore, please only direct me to UK stores if you're considering to make a suggestion.

Welcome to the forums! :)

Your computer's only got a 350W power supply, and knowing Dell, it's probably a crappy one. The most I'd put in there would be a Radeon HD5670. Happily, that's exactly where your budget puts you. :good:

Here's a 512MB 5670:

And a 1GB version that's slightly out of budget:

However, I should point out that if the most graphically-demanding game you'll be playing is Starcraft II, and you don't care if the settings are maxed out, then the included HD4350 will probably be just fine...

I wouldn't put a new card in at all until a new power supply is bought. You will be able to play any game out now on atleast medium settings with:

That PSU will handle a 5670...it's only a 60W card, and is quite a bit more powerful than a 3870. The whole system will stay well below 200W under full load.

yea it might be a squeeze, but i dont think he will harm anything, you can push your luck sometimes, tho it can be a gamble, friend has a 95W phenom 9500 with 3gb ram and a 9800gt, with two 500 gigabyte drives in a gateway he bought at office depot, it does quite alright with the standard 350W psu

Thank you all for sharing your opinions.

Lately, my friends have been telling me that for £570 - This machine is expensive....! I personally think it's a good buy since it also comes with 3 YRS Premium Accidental Warranty....and ultimately, a descent CPU: i7 860.

Of course it doesn't have hard-core 2000MHz RAM or anything but - It's descent, right?

What do you think?
