A limited connectivity problem I've never run into before

When I open and awaken my Dell laptop, it is already connected to my wireless connection. I can quickly launch Google and type in “mustard” and get search results. The connection only lasts for about thirty seconds and then I get the message. “limited or no connectivity.”

If I right click “Repair” the process stops when it get to renewing my IP address. The only way I can re-establish a wireless connection is by plugging my computer into the modem with a cable. I then then right click “Repair” on the the wireless connection, it quickly does its thing, I unplug the cable, and walk away with a wireless connection that lasts for hours.

Other laptops connect to the wireless. Running XP. Suggestions?

When you say awaken...do you mean turn on, or start from hibernation/sleep, because that is known to cause problems. When did the problem start? What (wireless I presume) adapter are you using?

Start from hibernation. Adapter is Broadcom 802.11.

Had to check the device manager. I had just taken my computer in to get some work done on it. They didn't mention replacing the wireless adapter, nor did they charge me anything. Weird.

Usually this means the power settings for the wireless card needs to be changed. Do not allow windows to turn hardware off.

So basically you need to uncheck the first box in the following image for your wireless adapter.

Thanks for that tip, but it didn't solve the problem.

The thing that makes this unique is that when the laptop stops hibernating, it is connected to the router for about 20 seconds. I can open a browser and start listening to NPR for about 5 seconds of streaming audio and then the connection is lost.

Hibernation is known to do that. What happens if you disable and reenable the adapter?

Yep, but this is different. After hibernation, the wireless card connects. I can surf from A to B for about 30 seconds, then it dies. This happens when my laptop is two feet from the wireless antennae. I cannot reconnect without plugging in a cable.
