My motherboard has a ddr2 800mhz standard,
so what are the chance of a 1gb ddr2 667mhz ram stick working on the mobo (taking into account that the ram stick is not on the QVL list)

Yes, it will work, but the ram will run at 667mhz, and if you stuck in another stick of ddr2 800 ram, it will run at 667mhz.

In that case is anybody able to tell me why the formentioned ram would possibly not be working, it came as a package deal with the mobo. but it really doesnt work in the machine. tried 512 ram which runs perfectly.
anyone know of a reason why the higher spec ram would not run?

or is it just a bad ram stick

What are your motherboard specifications? What are the specifications of the 512 megabyte RAM module that is working?
