A poster that is really stupid, can someone help?

Ok I'm a really dumb and slow person. I know almost nothing about computers compared to the average person today. I've been reading this and another board for a couple of days now and this one seems to have a of people that know what they're talking about. So, I want to buy a laptop for myself, is there a webpage that defines all the terminology that I keep hearing for every notebook and computer that I see? I don't wanna go into a store completely in the dark about everything and not know what I'm talking about. I mean I do know some things here and there, but in regards to the hardware, forget it. Like for instance, what does 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm mean? That just sounded like Hebrew. Any help would be great.

1gb is the amount of RAM (1024mb), Dual channel means it was split up to two sticks of 512mb each and is occupying both slots. Most laptops have only 2 slots (Dimm slots), so you won't have room to add another stick. 533Mhz is the speed of it (faster than 400Mhz). There is an acceleration of speed when the motherboard is capable of running dual channel, but very little and not as noticeable to many. To run dual channel both memory sticks (dimms) should be the same. Example: 1gb and 1gb, or 512mb and 512mb, not 1gb and 512mb (which will still work, but you wont have dual channel.

Also, there is nothing wrong with your question and there is no "dumb" people here. That's what a forum is all about, if you've got a question or something to share, you can post it and the community can help you out or hear what the latest news is. Anyone who calls another dumb or lame for not knowing something shouldn't be on a forum. This is a community that should help anyone out- whether its about terminology or a busted motherboard. It should be fine. And welcome, if you have any other questions, feel free to post it here. :D

It's pretty easy to catch on to.. mostly if it's fun. Use any search engine and there are many pages out there on the net that explain everything that is spoken here.

Cool dude, that helped a lot. Is 1gb of RAM good? What exactly is RAM? I always thought that was the speed and not the Mhz. Is 533Mhz a good speed? I'm slowly learning a little at a time, so I appreciate this help.

1gb of ram (random access memory) is very good. RAM is what your laptop goes to for running programs. the more ram u have the less lag (skipping around) you will experience.

Ok cool, so is 1gb good for a notebook? Oh yeah, what does DDR2 SDRAM stand for? What is the Mhz for? What kind of speed is that for?

yes, 1gb is pretty good for about any computer.(except very hardcore gamers) ddr means "Double Data Rate". in theory, the data that is being pushed through your ram at xxxMhz is doubled. however it is not exact and its not exactly double, except in theory.

i.e.: a lower end speed of ram is 133Mhz. if it is ddr ram then it becomes 266Mhz.

DDR2(from what i gather) is double ddr. i guess you could call it "Quad Data Rate" but i dont know if anyone refers to it as such.

ddr2 is for pentiums, thats about all i can tell you lol

yup, but i hear that AMD will support it soon, if not already.

Ok, cool this is helping a lot. Sorry I didn't read the announcement at the top of the forums, but I should have specified this in the first announcement. What would be a good laptop that was good for data storage for the program Access, probably Word and Excel too, but mostly Access. Nothing hardcore, it's for work, but I'm not doing millions of numbers and data configurations or anything like that, I just keep track of a data base that is pretty small. It's mostly just for storage for a very little amount of data. I would like to be able to play 2 games on it too, like that game City of Villains and City of Heroes. My budget would be about $1300. So what would be the specifications for a laptop like that?

Don't know about specs (because there are many configurations), but we can suggest many systems that'll fit into your budget. Is there any specs that you would like on yours? Some preferences are matte or glossy screen, small screen like 12-14" or larger 15-17", resolutions, or any other things?

Honesty, the screen isn't a big concern to me. I don't need a big one, 14" is fine. Matte and glossy also don't make a big deal either.

I'd say a customizeable Asus Z63a is a great all round performer- made with carbon fiber and can be priced cheaper than the amazing W3V. Its a better screen than the comparable HP DV1000 (too much light leakage). The Compaq V2000 and L2000 (black version) is pretty popular too. There's also the Toshiba M55- popular, but don't like the screen on that one either.

What kind of specs would be needed to play, City of Villains on a Asus Z63a?

Here are the requirements for City of Villians (found on EBgames.com)

Operating System: Windows XP/Me/2000/98
Processor: Intel Pentium III 800 Mhz or AMD Athlon 800 Mhz
RAM: 256 MB RAM
CD-ROM: CD-ROM Drive
Hard Drive: 4 GB Available HDD Space
Video Card: NVidia GeForce 2, ATI Radeon 8550 or Intel i810 series video card
Processor: 16-bit Sound Card

What does: 4 GB Available HDD Space mean?

And what is: NVidia GeForce 2, ATI Radeon 8550 or Intel i810 series video ?

4gb HD space means the program needs at least 4gb of available space on your hard drive. So make sure you've got enough on your HD for the installation. As for the second part, it's all about video card needed to play this game. Those listed aren't that powerful or up to date, so almost any laptop will be able to play this game.
