A problem with my new ram

I bought 1gb of ram (2x512mb) for my hp pavilion 462.uk and I am having a problem with it.

The max ram my pc can handle is 1gb, or so I was told. I already have 128mb in it so to put my new 1gb of ram into my pc I have to take out the 128mb that is already inside. When I do this my computer doesn't work but when I put the old one back in its fine. When I put one new stick (512mb) in with the old 128mb it also works fine and it detects the new ram. What I want is to have both new sticks working. Can anybody help me with this?

try putting the stick that you know works (512 one) into the other slot just to see if its the memory slot failiur.

I would double check to make sure that it supports 1GB.

And is the 128MB double sided? (both sides have chips on it). perhaps your computer can only handle 2x 1 sided sticks, or 1x double sided stick.

Older systems have both a total limit and a per-slot limit (usually 512) which means your 1Gb stick wont work.
