A question of RAM

I'm curious about something. Often i will see 1G of Ram...just one chip..and then i will see sets of 1G( 2 x 512). I really know nothing of Ram except the more the better. Is there any major differences between having 1 vs. 2 smaller oens working together?

The 1gb of ram is just that, 1gb of ram. The 2 sticks of 512mb of ram will work as dual channel which is 2 channels of ram as opposed to just one. Its the same amount of ram, it just works faster.

what if your motherboard doesnt support dual channel? will two sticks still be faster? and how much will you actually notice?
