Some time ago I posted a thread about "What shouldI do? 2/3 of my HDDs i bought on ebay were DOA!"... well I had 8 dead HDDS... and I fixed half. I got the 2 quantums up by punching them... litereally. one just died (the motor) and i hit it, and it stayed up for 5 mins! the buzzing one... i slammed it on the bed, and i plugged it in, and it ran !!! I did the same thing with a Seagate that was stuck, as well as a WD Caviar, and they are all free and running!!! Who can explain why this happened? Im guessing somehting waws stuck inside and ii got it loose... and this aint pure luck if it happnd in 4 driveS!!! :D :D :D :P

well my heatsink fan gets really really dusty and clogged after a few months.. maybe dust is building up inside the HD and it jamming them.. and hitting them knocks some of the dust loose or something? Just a thought...:D

hahaha if you got dust inside your HD you got problems.

if i was to guess it is the moter sticking for not being ran for a while.
im sure the moter has some sort of lubracant inside and after it is
packaged the lub could get a little bit sticky. this is just a guess tho.

i never had to do it to one of my own HD and dont know if i would keep it if i did.

if you've got dust in your hd it's dead.
the space between the reading heads and the platters is so small even a fingerprint is enough to wreck your hard drive. If a little dust got in, you can forget repairing them.

yes thatis true, the HDDs have a filter inside that cleans the air when it is running, when te filtering part of the HDD dies, so will the HD. THere are suppoesd to be NO dust particles on them, from the time they were sealed at the factory, there should be no dust. as for the 2 quantums, they were like that when i recieved them in the maill... very lame shipping... a wrap for each of the HDDS and a USPS envelope... the seagate and WD were sitting for a few months though =) hehe, wouldnt it be gread if all dead hard drives could be fixed this way?

Buying hard drives off ebay is not a very good idea. If I was going to buy it off ebay I will pick it up instead of having it mailed.
