If a vendor doesn't provide the needed details on any model board as to what it supports on cpus, memory, type of video card(s), and other devices the best place to look is right at the manufacturer's site by choosing the "Products" link there. This model apparently will not run an Opteron model cpu from the information seen there. But Asus does have some SLI models that will run the Opteron S939 model cpus. I'm looking at running an Opteron 185 on the next build which is already slightly overdue.

Let's take a look at a few Asus models that do run the Socket 939 model Opterons and go from there. So lets go to one or more vendors to pick a good Asus mb. thank you, i am getting different advise, but going with yours since well you are right,if the manufact says not then its a no. anywho, was realy looking forward to have sli but i had to cust my costs by 100$ and hence i had to drop form the 4400+ to something else. the 4200+ is decent but has only 512kb cache for each core where bot the 4400+ and the opt170 have 1mb each which was happy place for me. anywho , I though asus would be nice since I have NEVER had any problems with them, however the boards you posted dont support SLI. leaves me with 2 questions [and would realy appreciate it, buy you a pound of coffee and mail it out kinda deal]:
1) if i go with the boards you suggested which card should i go for? i was going for the 7900gtx (one now, one in 2 months when i saved up again]
2) is crossfire same deal as sli or am i just realy realy high?

The ATI X1900 XTX cards compete closely with the 7900 GTX model. Some do favor SLI over Crossfire while both are the high end lines available for running a dual card setup. I know there are a few other models by Asus that will support SLI and run the Opteron model cpus. The Opteron 165 however is the favored for any OCing planned. Personnally I'm waiting for the price to drop on the Opteron 185 model to get the top of the line there.
I favor stability over OC when doing other things like beta testing while still running a few system pounders like those put out by STEAM. Unfortunate that the other Asus models were apparently out of stock or simply not found at other vendors along with newegg. Most SLI models do tend to be Intel not AMD though. Opterons due tend to lean towards server cases unlike the FX series great in gaming cases for stability reasons. If I run across any SLIs that support the Opteron line I'll edit them in here. At present I have to deal with an overheating and series of lockups on the old Socket A model here. I'm waiting for those Opterons to see a price drop to get out of this case soon.

so this is what im going to do , buy all my stuff, 4400+, a8n pre, 7900gtx, and use the ram i got right now which is ddr333 and in a month or so do some over time and save up for some nice ram.... so what if my box runs at a slower speed for a like a month.. i got a celery 900mhz right now anything is better than that.. mind you this thing sat through rough times with me..
Many of the new boards will run DDR400 but not DDR33. DDR2 boards will also require you to buy new memory. Depending on your budget you may want to take a good look at some AMD model cpus and the boards that run them before rushing into another sssllloowww

Yes the A8N-SLI Premium supports Opterons. If you look more closely at the compatible CPU's, you will see it will support an Opteron from 144 to 175. However you need to get at least BIOS revision number 1010.001 for it to work.

pc-eye i didn't mean im buying ddr333 ram, what i was saying was I am willing to buy all my other stuff, use my 333 ram that i have right now and wait a month and buy ilke 2gigs of ram when i can afford it. my budge is very very fixed and well i have been trying to tweak it for 3 weeks.

I realized that you may have to wait to get everything over a period of time. This is why I made mention to let you know that memory was also an expense to addin to get the most out of that system. At present I am currently going to have to locate an AMD Atholon XP3200+ since the one here is soon to wear out. The 54C idle temp seen with a new Zalman cooler on for a week is too high despite reseating that to insure a quality bond of the compound. By backclocking memory down to 133mhz and then returning to the 200mhz setting(for each channel obviously when in dual mode) Windows is longer seeing freezeups after something like 2minutes.
When I have a slightly higher budget here a new built will replace the present one with it being set aside for a simple backup system if needed. I fully understand what you are going through there trying to get some upgrading done. Otherwise you would have been asking about the latest FX model cpu or NVidia driven 7900 GS video card.

It's ironic. But that was the same model board a friend replaced twice a few months ago when the one that was to replace a defective one had the exact same problem. The advice given at the time due to a bad batch was to either choose a different model board for the new build or go after another make and model to that up and running. Another one loyal to Asus soon saw another model take the place there. But that was a rarity.
