I'm pretty much ready to hit the "submit order" button. Here's the configuration I'm going with:

  • Is everything compatible?
  • Will the motherboard support crossfier for multiple HD 5870s?

I was originally going to get the HD 5970, but I don't want to wait for it to come back into stock. The fact that one HD 5970 is cheaper than 2 HD 5870's breaks my heart, but its a necessary sacrifice.

Looks good. I would say if you plan on overclocking, get an aftermarket heatsink and some arctic silver compound to cool your CPU chip.

I've heard Asrock is not that good for overclocking, when compare to some leading brand.
Get some thermal compound if you don't have any.

go for a terabyte if you are willing to spend extra $10 to $15 more and you get twice the storage space. You can find a terabyte hard drive for $69.99 easy these days.

daisy is right, asrock is not the best for overclocking. get a gigabyte or asus for overclocking, they have much better features.

i would ditch the Asrock and go gigabyte or asus midrange mobo's...

Yeah, change to ASUS or GIGABYTE motherboards

ASUS P6T with DDR3 RAM support - $229.99

and to that get DDR3 1333-1600MHz DC RAM:

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) Dual-Channel 1600MHz

or

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) Dual-Channel 1600MHz

Get this HDD:

This mobo:

If you really plan on going crossfire in the future, i would recommend an 850W unit of one of these for the same cost:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341003

And then this memory:

Also i would recommend getting an aftermarket cooler for that setup.

ABout the 5970, unless you plan on watercooling you are better off with two 5850's, as the 5970 has to be underclocked in order to stay within a decent thermal envelope, and you will get far more overclocking out of two 5850's and the 5850 is significantly cheaper than the 5870.

That memory is dual channel, not triple channel.
