i have never had a video card with an s video output,so my question is can you use a standard hd tv with an s video input as a display for your computer?

You could, however S-Video is not a high-def output, so anything short of a movie would look horrible via an S-Video connection, especially text.

hey thanks. i have posted this question on many forums and nobody will give me an answer.

what about those dvi to component converters? will one of those give me a fairly clear image?

my plan was to use the hdtv as my primary monitor. like a media center pc, where i could watch movies and surf the web from the comfort of my couch.

is this a feasible idea or am i just dreaming?

DVI to component converter would be fine, I would think. They're both high quality signals. Component doesn't carry audio though, you gotta work around this.

Plan sounds good. Is the HDTV in question CRT or LCD? Many CRT HD's have a real problem displaying text, regardless of the quality of the connection, they just weren't made for it. We picked up a 30inch WS 1080i HDTV (2-3 years old) for $100 from the Goodwill (noobs). Ended up getting rid of it , for $250 :D, because no matter what I tried, the text was still blurry as all hell.

thats good news because i have an lcd hd tv, my tv is not a full 1080i however. My tv is 720p, but if i use my xbox 360 i get a better image if i set it for 1080i. Do you think this will work? i dont know if it matters but the tv is only a 19"

Most 360 games are 720p native, so you don't really need to go any higher, it'll just stretch. If it looks better with that setting though, use it.

so how would i go about doing this? do i just plug it in and it will work just like that regardless of my video card? or do i need do get a specific video card?

just any one with a s video output will do

some of the newer video cards (like the 8800) come with a converter to convert to the 7 pin s video to a component out
