Access the MAC Address

Hi,

I'm not sure this question is a motherboard question, but I'll give it a try.

Where is the MAC address located in a computer?

Is it on a chip somewhere on the motherboard?

How can you get your computer to display its MAC address?

Is it possible to disable the MAC address or deny access to it?

Can a MAC address be spoofed?

Thanks.

Do an IP config /all and the physical address would by your mac address. As far as your last 2 questions go, unable to answer them due to forum rules.

1. The MAC is embedded in the network interface card. In pre-built machines, it's usually located on a sticker somewhere on the outside of the computer. It's also on the bottom of most network hardware like switches, routers, access points, etc.

2. If you're talking about the MAC of the integrated NIC, yes, it's on the motherboard. It can also be on a PCI-E wireless adapter, or USB wireless adapter.

3. If on a PC you can run ipconfig /all. Or go to your network connections and view the status of each NIC.

4. You can't "disable" the MAC address, as it's needed when communicating on a network. Anything on the network can see your MAC address with monitoring software, or if they have access to the switch/router/AP you're connected to.

5. Yes, but we can't discuss it here.
