Accessing avi files from 2nd HD maxes CPU?

Howdy,

I just bought and installed a Seagate 160 GB Ultra ATA/100, 7200RPm, 8MB as a storage device for very large video file created from a MiniDV camcorder. As some of you know these files are very large (1hr video = 13 GB), so my old 40 Gig (C) needed a little back up.

After installation, transfering files to the new (F) drive went well, but when i attempted to playback these files on WMP the files had extremely choppy video and audio. I also noticed that the CPU Usage shot up to 100% for the duration of the choppy playback on the new HD. I can transfer the same file to the old C drive and play it back smoothly and with a Cpu Usage of around 20%. The new (F) drive will play back smaller video fine, but not the larger video files (the reason i bought it in the first place).

Im on a Dell Dim4600
2.66 GHz Pent 4
768 MB DDR

Does this sound normal or is there something i can do to get me new hard drive to playback smoothly? Thank you!

I figured it out...

Alright, my problem was in the BIOS, i needed to get in there and change the settings from "off" to "auto" of the "secondary device" in the hard drive area.

Also needed to make sure the advanced settings on my IDE ATA/ESDI Hard Disk Controller (in device manager) were set to "DMA if available".

Everythings now running smoothly.
