accessing files on IDE drive after computer failed

Greetings!

I have a 2003ish Gateway laptop that recently crapped out on me. I did have a password to log into the computer.

I think it is the motherboard that went. The harddrive still works.

So, I purchased an external HD case, and put my hard drive in that.

I plugged it into my new work computer, and it recognizes it, and I can go into folders, but I cant access the information. I have gone through the Windows operation to claim admin rights, but I still can not open the picture files. (I am trying to sell some stuff on Craigslist, but I cant access the photos)

I have also tried to force the HD to be a slave with the pin connector, and that doesn't work either.

How can I get to the files on my hard drive?

Thanks in advance. This is very frustrating.

Right click on the folder, go to properties, security, advanced, and set yourself as the owner of the files, apply the settings, then give yourself full permission.

Hi, and thanks for the response.

I have done that, and went in and added this computer as the owner. When I do that, it gives me the following error:

"An error occured while applying security information to:
F:\Documents and Settings\Adminstrator
Access is denied."

Interesting, doing a quick Google search you aren't alone. There are several methods that work for some but not others in this thread, perhaps one of them will work for you: http://social.technet.microsoft.com...nal-hard-drive-on-windows-7?forum=w7itproperf

Thanks!
I went through all of them, and none worked. I did verify that I had all three users called out as being able to have all of the permissions.

I did try F8 before windows started, and it would not go into safe mode.

I dont have another computer with something other than Windows 7 to try unfortunately.

The laptop did run windows XP, and this drive is NTFS formatted.

Ugh this is so frustrating. I can go in and see all of the folders, and files, but when I try to open them it gives me the message I dont have the rights to.

I finally found a tutorial online that explained a different way to go about it. I did that, and I now at least have access to my Craigslist folder, which was what I wanted to begine with.

It is odd, the locked sybol still shows on the folders, but I can open the picture files now.

Download Hirens Boot CD, burn it to a CD or flashdrive, and use that to boot into Mini Windows XP. Use that to copy your files over.

^That!

OR:

1. Buy empty CD disk

2. Download Linux Ubuntu ISO image

3. Burn that ISO image to the empty CD disk

4. Boot from that CD disk

5. Once the desktop is loaded, copy EVERYTHING from that drive to one folder on your computer which you can call...I don't know..."ALL DATA"

6. Problem solved

NOTE: If you don't want to buy empty CD disk, you can use USB flash memory stick instead to do the same thing...The tool is called UNetBootin.

It can't be simpler than this...
